How to choose the right bat?

buyers guide cricket-thetidkes

Buying a cricket bat is the most exciting aspect for a cricketer. Choosing a cricket bat is never easy because all the bats look the same. A batter would love to choose his own bat from experience, friend’s suggestions, reading reviews or taking clues from a buyer’s guide. Many views and suggestions can only lead to confusion. And with so many brands to choose from, a batter only ends up in a dilemma as to which cricket bat for the leather ball would be right for him. So here are a few tips to let to you have a clear picture of the bat that might suit you perfectly.

Bat Size

Choosing the right bat size is very important. It will surely make a difference in your performance. A large bat is handy only to a tall player. A bat smaller in size would suit a player who is not very tall.  When you hold the bat and take a stance then you should not be bending too low nor should you be taking a very upright position. A bat that feels right in your hand when you swing, should be right for you.

Ball type

Cricket can be played with leather balls, rubber balls or tennis balls.

Leather balls are usually used for playing matches as they are heavier and sturdy. So heavier bats are used while playing with leather ball. Bats with wider edges give a better impact with leather balls. Tennis balls are used for practice matches as they are lighter. Then there are the red balls, white balls and the pink ball also to choose from. Ideally the ball weight should be around 156 – 162g.

Bat weight

Weight of the cricket bat ranges from 1.2 to 1.4kg and the height of the bat should not exceed 38 inches. If the bat is too heavy you might not feel steady when you take a stance and swing it. Hence it is important that you hold the bat with your top hand and feel the weight. The right bat will make you feel comfortable and confident.

There’s a bat for every budget. Finally, the bat selection depends on your playing style. If you are an aggressive batter who would like to hit every ball out of the park, then you should prefer a heavy bat that aids your style of playing. Heavier bats does not necessarily mean better performance. If you are more of a defensive player, then can chose a lighter bat. The bats that have higher grades are costlier than the one with the lower grades.

Bat Willow

Willow is a lightweight but hardwood having good shock resistance. Two most popular willows used for making professional cricket bats are the English willow and the Kashmir willow.

Types of cricket bats –

  • English willow bats
  • Kashmir willow bats
  • Softball cricket bats
  • Training cricket bats

1. English Willow

English willow are the finest woods that can be used to make cricket bats. They are of the best quality wood imported from European countries to give you perfect cricketing experience. English willows are the best ones, if you are a professional and want to play with leather balls. These bats are graded from 1 to 5, with 1 being the best quality bat. Higher grade means that the grains are straighter and there are less blemishes on the bat. These bats have higher density and is stronger than Kashmir willow. They are also expensive when compared with Kashmir Willow bats.

2. Kashmir Willow

Kashmir Willow are the best substitutes to English Willow bats as they have similar qualities as an English Willow bat. The willow was introduced by the British to the Indians when they ruled India during the 1820’s. This willow is found in ‘Kashmir’, a Union territory in India and hence the name Kashmir Willow. Kashmir willow bats are a combination of traditional tools with modern technology to give an intriguing experience to the batter. It is still a livelihood for many Kashmiri families. Moisture content in these willows is low due to climatic conditions in this part of the world. These bats require constant knocking and oiling and are way cheaper than English Willow Bats.

3. Softball cricket bats

Soft ball cricket bats are mainly used by children to play cricket at home or on the street. These bats are generally less expensive as they are made from rubber and wood. Professional cricketers do not use such bats. These bats are useful tool to develop skills and batting techniques in young upcoming cricket players.

4. Training bats

These bats are generally used by coaches to train and develop skills in batters. These bats may be made from either English willow or Kashmir willow. These bats are available in different sizes and widths.
